We would also like to thank Ethypharm for accepting to perform the lab work to support this study. This study was funded by Apothicom Distribution, that is, Apothicom Distribution paid for the lab work done by Ethypharm. You can also search for this author in PubMed Google Scholar.
LK proposed the protocol. Ethypharm provided the morphine sulphate and did the lab work. LK wrote the article, based on the report provided by Ethypharm. The author read and approved the final manuscript. Correspondence to Lenneke Keijzer. FRPA is a philanthropic organisation whose main mission is to reduce health risks resulting from drug use, in particular in people who inject drugs, a mission completely in line with the scope of this article.
Indirectly, the financial situation of Apothicom Distribution thus has an influence on the financial health of the research and prevention fund. The author thus has a professional and a personal interest in difficulties encountered by PWID when filtering their drugs, as well in filters as harm reduction tools.
She has received no fee from Apothicom Distribution for this work, nor does she have any stock options of this company. From my point of view, this type of studies on the efficacy and studies on the acceptability by PWID of harm reduction methods and tools are an important part of our work and help us to provide a service of a better quality. Conclusions The provision of a method that is easy to use, reduces harms associated to the injection of insoluble particles and recovers virtually all the active drug has a large chance to be adopted by people who use drugs. Objective This study was set up to examine the influence of different preparation practices, including filtration, on particle count, morphine concentration and filtration ease.
Our hypothesis is that more morphine is extracted in a 2-mL solution after heating. Though the majority use this method, other preparation methods are used. Full size image. Methods Two preparation practices are thoroughly explored. Protocol for the cold preparation technique A mg morphine sulphate capsule was opened, and the microbeads were put on a carefully folded piece of paper. Three additional tests were performed: Rinsing of wheel filters : It is known that wheel filters have a high void volume and retain part of the solution [ 12 , 14 ].
The three membrane filters were used alone, a combined filtration was not necessary. Data collection Three tests were performed per preparation technique. Particle retention Without filtration, a large number of insoluble particles are observed in the morphine sulphate solution, consisting of starch and talc particles. Comparison of the cold and lukewarm preparation techniques, according to the filter used Full size table.
Conclusions When slow release morphine sulphate capsules are diverted by injection, the use of filters is essential to prevent long term complications due to the injection of insoluble drug fillers such as talc and starch.
