Air Force Officer Training School tests officer recruits physically and mentally while also developing leadership skills. The program consists of a week of prerequisite distance learning before participating in military training and leadership development for college graduates.

The USAF course presents lectures, classroom exercises, guided discussions, field leadership activities, and after-hours training activities to prepare future officers. Recruits live at Maxwell AFB during training with a complex that includes academic buildings, auditoriums, dormitories, dining, physical fitness center, and athletic fields.

After graduating from Air Force OTS, many officers attend additional training to focus on specialties like piloting, navigation, space and missile operations, or other specialties. Those that attend the Air Force Academy receive a world-class education that is completely paid for by the government. The Air Force ROTC program rewards you with tuition assistance but is only applicable for students currently in college or thinking about attending.

Lastly, you can join the United States Air Force and move up the ranks as enlisted personnel until you get promoted to a commissioned officer.

The Air Force requires you to have a four-year college degree or meet the guidelines for OTS in an alternative method.

The USAF does have slightly different requirements for specialty military careers like healthcare, ministry, and legal. Speaking with a local Air Force recruiter can help answer more questions about specific requirements for Officer Training School. Air Force Officers are leaders that receiving extensive training at OTS to prepare for the difficult assignment. Leaders are in charge of other personnel and must make difficult decisions, some of which may risk human life.

As a result, Air Force OTS provides aspiring officers with the tools and resources needed to become fair and effective leaders. Air Force Officers — the leaders of the military branch — need the knowledge and skill development to serve as managers of other military personnel. Prospective Officers receive evaluations on their leadership potential, moral standards, and academic strengths.

However, before you get to training you need to meet the basic requirements and go through the same process as other recruits. The selective process is purposely designed that way to make sure you have what it takes to become an officer. The multiple-choice exam features topics that range from verbal and math skills to questions regarding your specific field s of interest. As the name implies, phase three of OTS incorporates practical application of the knowledge gained during the first two phases.

Candidates will have the opportunity to apply their leadership skills by training the new lower class and lead peers through officer trainee wing positions. Additionally, candidates will be required to pass leadership evaluations in order to advance to the next phase.

Culminating in graduation from OTS, phase four focuses on mentorship and the transition into becoming an Air Force officer. To be accepted into the program, candidates must pass the Air Force Qualifying Test, a physical and mental screening exam, and a selection board. Full disclosure: I had 3 pairs but I really only ever wore 2 during any week. You can take your chances I did but someone will get caught and have all their things dumped into the hallway.

If you are attending OTS during the winter months October-April make sure that you purchase cold-weather gear. You absolutely want a hat, jacket, gloves, etc.

I strongly encourage you to bring a printer with an additional cartridge of black ink and a printer cable so you can connect directly to your laptop.

Having a printer is a huge value-add to yourself and your flight, you will absolutely have a use for it. Bring a good pillow and a blanket with you. See 3 for reasons why I did not bring a pillow with me. After 5 weeks, I eventually caved and had my wife send me a care package. If you have a talent for growing facial hair, do yourself a favor and bring an electric shaver as well as regular razors.

During the first few weeks of OTS you will be given anywhere from minutes to get ready in the morning. I did the whole full-shave with a razor and shaving cream gig for a while and eventually learned from my prior-enlisted peers by getting myself an electric razor. It will save you 5 minutes every morning, some blood, and maybe a few s. Realize that OTS is a school. You will sit in a flight room and auditoriums for lectures and will be tested on the materials taught to you.

You will need materials to write and take notes with. Before becoming the upstanding Officer Trainee that I eventually became, young OT Cooper spent the entire week before OTS in Las Vegas casinos staying up far too late, spending far too much money, and generally having a great time; I also showed up to OTS with no pens, no paper, and, apparently, no common sense.

Would I do it again? Would I also make sure I have all those materials ready before leaving for Vegas? It will save you from the same headaches I put myself through. Make sure you show up ready and willing to learn.
